What is self-advocacy?
Self-advocacy is when people with intellectual disabilities speak up for ourselves about the things that are important to us.
What do self-advocates do?
Self-advocates work for the inclusion of all people in a community.
Self-advocates do three important things:
- we understand our rights and how to make decisions, and we speak up about our rights and what we want in our own lives
- we come together and work as a group, supporting and learning from one another
- we work together and with others to make change happen by advocating for inclusion
