Hello, my name is Judy Huett. I am from Speak Out Tasmania which is a
self-advocacy organisation. Tasmania is a small island state of Australia.
In May I attended the 17th World Congress in Birmingham and met
hundreds of self-advocates from all over the world. It was
an amazing experience!
The Global Self Advocacy Summit – WOW! It was fantastic, there were
so many self-advocates from all around the world and we
all had the same issues. It left me very motivated to work on the calls
to action. It was a very proud moment for me when Speak Out’s
parents with intellectual disability self-advocates featured
in the calls to action video. This was so empowering.
I met a number of Empower Us Action team members at the
conference. It was great to see them face to face. Oswald from Austria and I swapped tokens from our countries. I’m sure this is the start of lots of new friendships.
I really like the Empower Us session about “What makes good support”.
This is a really important topic because if our support isn’t good, or
takes over, it takes away our voice.
I hope the Empower Us Action Team can share our
training with more people and help other people with intellectual
disability grow into strong self-advocates with our help.
